Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum: The Face Oil That Ended All Face Oils

Before every clean-beauty brand had a face oil, there was one golden bottle from Napa Valley. This is the story of the face oil that ended all face oils.

Some skincare launches with a billboard. Vintner's Daughter launched with an email to 140 friends and family. No celebrity founder, no ten-step system, no new product every season: just one serum, made slowly, by a woman who grew up in her family's Napa Valley vineyard.

More than a decade later, that one violet bottle has become the face oil makeup artists keep in their kits, beauty editors quietly repurchase and facialists name when you ask what they actually use. Its makers like to call it "the winningest face oil ever," and for once, the hype is mostly earned.

It's also the product I'd keep if I had to give up everything else on my shelf. Here's how a serum made like a fine wine became one of skincare's true cult classics.

First came the vineyard

Most cult products start in a lab. Vintner's Daughter started in a vineyard.

April Gargiulo grew up in Napa Valley, in a family devoted to making fine wine, and later spent years helping run the family vineyard. She had also struggled with her skin her whole life and, by her own account, had tried everything, from Accutane to coconut oil.

The turning point came in 2009, in an apothecary in Marrakesh, where she tried a nutrient-packed face oil for the first time. She told The Zoe Report: “I woke up the next morning and it was like angels were singing.” A few years later, pregnant with her first daughter, she took a hard look at the ingredient lists of her own products and didn't like what she saw: mostly filler, very little that actually did anything.

“

I come from Napa Valley, where shortcuts like that are not allowed.

April Gargiulo, founder of Vintner's Daughter

So she decided to make her own, with the same standards her family applied to wine. She spent around two years working with formulators and went through more than 60 versions before she was happy. She didn't want a ten-step regimen. She wanted one product that did everything, and nothing in it just for show.

“

Nothing on the ingredient list is there for show.

The legend

Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum

22 botanicals, three weeks of infusing, one golden bottle. The face oil that started it all.

Made like a fine wine

A great wine can't be rushed, and neither can this serum. That's the whole idea behind it.

Most skincare is mixed in a matter of hours. Vintner's Daughter starts with whole plants rather than isolated extracts, and infuses them into the oils slowly, over about three weeks. The brand calls the process Phyto Radiance Infusion. The goal, as Gargiulo explained to The Detox Market, is to capture “the full spectrum of activity” of each plant, not just one isolated part of it.

The base is grapeseed oil, a nod to the vineyard, which is light and helps carry everything else into the skin. Layered on top are 22 botanicals, many sourced from small family farms. A few of the stars:

Grapeseed oil

The base

Light and fast-absorbing, and a fitting start for a winemaker's daughter.

Rose

Bulgaria's Valley of the Roses

Precious rose oil for softness and that unmistakable floral scent.

Frankincense & cypress

The renewal duo

Paired to help calm and renew skin, including breakout-prone skin.

Hazelnut oil

Piedmont, Italy

A lightweight oil that keeps the texture silky rather than greasy.

Carrot seed & evening primrose

The nourishers

Rich in nutrients for tone, softness and elasticity.

Bergamot & neroli

The brighteners

Citrus and blossom oils that give the serum its glow, and its scent.

Two details make it feel different from other face oils. First, the violet glass bottle, which the brand uses to protect the oils from light. Second, the scent. It smells like a garden in bloom, but according to Gargiulo, “not a single ingredient was added for scent.” The fragrance comes entirely from the botanicals themselves.

From a guest room to a cult

Vintner's Daughter didn't become famous overnight. It became famous one bottle at a time. Here's how it happened.

2009

The discovery

April tries a face oil in a Marrakesh apothecary and is instantly hooked on the idea of skincare that truly nourishes.

2012

The idea

Pregnant with her first daughter, she decides to create skincare to the same standard as Napa wine.

2013

The launch

Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum, launched in 2013

After more than 60 versions, Active Botanical Serum launches with an email to 140 friends and family. One product, nothing else.

2014

The guest room

April's guest room becomes the company headquarters, where every order is packed and shipped by hand.

2015

The face oil to end all face oils

Into The Gloss gives it the headline that defines it. Orders jump from 30–50 a day to 200 in a single morning, while April, eight months pregnant, is still fulfilling them herself. CAP Beauty becomes its first retailer.

2016

The It-shops

Goop, Violet Grey and Net-a-Porter start stocking it. Gwyneth Paltrow brings it to Goop.

2017

The awards era

Awards pile up, and the serum earns its nickname as “the winningest face oil ever.” Celebrity makeup artists and the press follow.

2019

The second product

Vintner's Daughter Active Treatment Essence

Six years after launch, Vintner's Daughter finally adds a second product: Active Treatment Essence, which takes five weeks to make.

2023

The tenth birthday

Vintner's Daughter Active Renewal Cleanser

A limited-edition anniversary bottle marks ten years, and Active Renewal Cleanser launches, later winning an Oprah O-Ward.

2025

Twelve years in

Still independent, still B Corp certified and still deliberately small. In Gargiulo's words: “10 years down, 100 more to go.”

Along the way, it picked up a devoted following, from Tracee Ellis Ross to makeup artist Mary Phillips, who works with Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, according to The Zoe Report. And through it all, the brand has stayed small on purpose.

“

I don't have investors, so I don't have the pressure to pump out new products.

April Gargiulo, to The Zoe Report

How to use it

Gargiulo calls the serum “the rock to your skincare”: the base you build the rest of your routine around. A little goes a long way.

1

Cleanse and tone. Start with clean skin. A toner or essence first helps the oil spread.

2

Use a few drops. About a third of a dropper is enough for your whole face.

3

Press, don't rub. Warm it between your palms and press it into your skin, then massage for about 30 seconds.

4

Seal or skip. Follow with moisturizer if your skin is dry, or let it be your last step at night.

Morning or night both work. In the morning, give it a minute to absorb before sunscreen. Not sure where an oil fits? Here's what order to apply skincare.

Why it's still worth it, and our verdict

Face oils come and go. Vintner's Daughter has outlasted most of the brands that tried to copy it.

It isn't perfect. The price is a real investment, and while a bottle lasts a long time, it's still one of the most expensive face oils you can buy. The plant oils that give it that gorgeous scent, including citrus oils like bergamot and lemon, can irritate very sensitive skin, and critics such as Beautiful With Brains argue that's a reason to skip it. If your skin is reactive, patch test first. And if your skin is very oily or combination, you may prefer it only at night.

But for dry, dull or stressed skin, few products deliver this kind of glow this quickly. Press it in and your skin goes from tired to luminous in seconds.

Our verdict

The face oil that set the standard, and still the one to beat.
